As the coordinator and one of three newsroom leaders of the York Daily Record’s Teen Takeover program, I help each summer with the selection of new members. I’m joined by multiplatform journalists Leigh Zaleski and Ashley May.
As each school year comes to an end, we say goodbye to seniors on the staff — some of whom have been with Teen Takeover longer than ourselves. We look at how many openings are available to fill, out of 24 slots in the program, and put out a call for applications. We always get a high number of applications, and it can be a very competitive process since there are limited openings.
This year, we welcome seven new members to the staff. New staffers get their first assignment in July during orientation — post an introduction to the Teen Takeover website. So, here’s your chance to meet each of them:

More about Teen Takeover
The York Daily Record’s Teen Takeover program aims to be by teens, for teens and about teens. Potential teen staff members go through an application process to get into the program. The staff meets monthly at the Daily Record office, where they learn more about writing, journalism and each other. Special guests from different areas of the newsroom come to the meetings to tell their stories and give advice and training.
